The major acidic polysaccharide, named Angelica-pectin A, was isolated from the roots of Angelica acutiloba KITAGAWA. It was homogeneous as judged by electrophoresis and gel chromatography. It was composed of D-galacturonic acid: L-rhamnose: L-arabinose: D-galactose: D-glucose in a molar ratio of approximately 160:6:4:2:1, and its molecular weight was estimated to be 20800. About half (19/40) of the D-galacturonic acid residues exist as the-methyl esters. O-Acetyl groups were identified, and the content amounted to 5.0%. Methylation analysis of the carboxyl-reduced derivative and Smith degradation of the pectin indicated the structural features.
