Demyelinating neuropathy (DN) associated with "Benign" anti-myelin associated glycoprotein (MAG) IgM gammopathy, and multiple sclerosis (MS) are disorders with presumed immunopathogenesis. To obtain evidence of T cell activation, we determined serum concentrations of soluble interleukin-2 receptors (sIL-2 R) in 25 patients with DN associated with "Benign" anti-MAG IgM gammopathy and cerebrospinal concentrations of sIL-2 R in 35 patients with MS. Both in DN associated with "Benign" anti-MAG IgM gammopathy and clinically active (relapsing phase, pretreatment stage) MS sIL-2 R were markedly increased compared with normal healthy controls. In MS sIL-2 R concentrations were not correlated with disease severity. These data shows that T cells are activated in DN associated with "Benign" anti-MAG IgM gammopathy and in MS.
