Formation and Structure of Icosahedral Phase in Al-Mg-Li Alloys

We present the formation of a face-centered icosahedral(FCI) phase in melt quenched Al-Mg-Li alloys and a stable related crystalline phase in Al_<50>Mg_<20>Li_<30> alloy. On the basis of the systematic change in intensity of superlattice reflections along composition due to chemical order between Li and Mg atoms, we modify a structure model based on the sructure of icosahedral Mg-Al-Zn alloy for the FCI phase in Al-Mg-Li alloys. It has an ordered arrangement of two icosahedral atom clusters. One consists of 20 Mg and 24 Al and the other contains 20 Li and 24 Al. The corresponding 1/1 crystal approximat has the Al_<24>Mg_<20> cluster at the origin and the Al_<24>Li_<20> cluster at the body center and its space group is Pm3.icosahedral quasicrystalAl-Li-Mgface-centered icosahedral latticeFrank-Kasper type
