Microstructure and Mechanical Strengths of Metastable FCC Solid Solutions in Al-Ce-Fe System

A metastable fcc solid solution (SS) with high mechanical strengths and good bending ductility was found to be formed in rapidly solidified Al-Ce-Fe alloys containing the solute elements below about 6 at%. The SS consists of equiaxed grains with a size of about 2μm and contains a high density of internal defects. The highest hardness (H_v) and tensile fracture strengtn (σ_f) are 440 and 860 MPa in the as-quenched state and remain almost unchanged up to about 600 K for 1 h, though fine compounds begins to precipitate accompanied by a decrease of the lattice parameter of the SS phase. The further increase of annealing temperature gives a distinct decomposition of the SS into Al+compounds, leading to a significant decrease in H_v, σ_f and ductility. The high mechanical strengths of the mestable SS are explained by the combined effect of the solid solution hardening and the introduction of a high density of defects. The maintenance of the high strength and good ductility for the SS up to about 600 K allows expectation of obtaining a new type of high strength materials with good heat-resistant property.
