Local Therapy of Natural Interferon-α Directry to Involved Sternal Bone in a Patient with Multiple Myeloma

A 65 year-old male was diagnosed as myeloma on the basis of IgG(k)-monoclonal protein of 7,160 mg/dl in the serum, decreased IgA of 44mg/dl and IgM of 37 mg/dl and proliferations of plasma cells of 86.4% out of nucleated cells in an aspirated bone marrow at the age of 62. The patient has had a 4 years' clinical course with different treatment. An initial induction therapy of VMP (vindesine, melphalan and prednisolone) produced a transient partial response during the first hospitalization, followed by intramuscular injections of natural interferon-α (n-IFN-α) weekly at the out-patient clinic. Because of a sternal swelling with severe pain, direct injections of n-IFN-α, 300 X 10^4 IU, 50 times totally into the sternal bone resulted in an improvement of the sternum, subjectively and on roentgenograms and scintigrams. Furthermore, the second partial response was obtainded by 3 times of VAD (Vincristine, Adriamycin and Dexamethasone) with a decrease of M-protein and an improvement of backgrand immunoglobulins in the serum of the patient.
