An Effect of Natural Interferon-α in the Course of a Patient with Adult T-Cell Leukemia

A 43-year-old male visited the hospital because of alopecia and dermal eruptions, and was found to have a leucocytosis of 32,900/mm^3 in the peripheral blood including abnormal cells with convoluted nuclei of 60%. A diagnosis of adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) was made. On admission, intramuscular injection of natural interferon alpha (n-IFN-α, Sumiferon^<[○!R]> was repeated with a dose of 300 X 10^4 IU daily. Inital leukocytosis tended to decrease at the first hospitalization. Three years later at the second admission, n-IFN-α was not effective and alternatively different chemotherapeutic agents were somewhat effective. One year later at the third and final admission, an abrupt increase of LDH, fever and DIG complications introduced another trial of n-IFN-α, with an improvement of these data. He died of cardiac failure. In the present report, an approximate 5 years' survival was obtained by therapies including intermittent administration of n-IFN-α.
