Improvement of type SUS 316 stainless steel surface by means of laser alloying

Influences of laser alloying parameters on the structure and microhardness of austenitic stainless steel type 316 SS specimen were investigated. Mixture of aluminum and silicon powder was placed on the substrate surface and then alloyed with pulsed Nd-YaAG laser. It was found that energy density for laser alloying is present within approximate interval of 0.4 - 0.9 W/mm^2. Another important factor for producing uniform and crack-free layer is a temperature of specimen before alloying. Preheating of specimen at 250℃ before laser alloying could decrease defects formation in the modified layer. Combining of preheating and high energy density (0.75±0.05 W/mm^2) leads to form a uniform and crack-free layer, which exhibits the hardness of more than two times higher than that of substrate.
