The purpose of this study was to determine if a questionnaire posted on the World Wide Web (WWW) was valid for survey-type investigations. A questionnaire was posted on the WWW to determine if differences existed between Japanese and Caucasian populations regarding facial profile preferences for males and females. Two series of profiles were made based on average Japanese adult female and male profiles, both of whom had the lower lip 1.0 mm before Ricketts' E-line. In each series normal profile was in the center as profile number 4. Number 3, 2, and 1 to the left were successively 2 mm retrusive and number 5, 6 and 7 to the right were successively 2 mm protrusive. These two series of profiles were displayed on the home page of our department and access made available to people all over the world through the WWW. Respondents were asked to choose the ideal profile for male and female adult. The corresponding number of the profile chosen was used as a score to evaluate facial profile preference. The data was analyzed for two main groups, Caucasians (CA) and Japanese (JP), and further for four subgroups : male Caucasians (MC), female Caucasians (FC), male Japanese (MJ), and female Japanese (FJ). The number of respondents to the questionnaire was 141 in total (40 MC, 28 FC, 60 MJ, 13 FJ). The average preference for both groups was between number 2 and 3. There was no statistically significant difference between Caucasians and Japanese, or among any of the subgroups. These findings indicate that Caucasian and Japanese respondents to this survey appear to share a common esthetic preference for facial profiles. Furthermore, the WWW may be a useful way to conduct international orthodontic surveys.
