Note on the Viscosity of Dilute Suspension of Rigid Particles

A new expression for the viscosity of dilute suspension of a rigid particle with an arbitrary shape is derived. The excess viscosity △η due to the presence of the particle in a shear flow γ(r_y, r_x, O) is given by △η=-1/(4γV)∫[ζ_x(α)R_y(α)+ζ_y(α)R_x(α)]dα where R is the coordinate of a point on the surface specified by the parameter α, and ζ is the force exerted on the fluid at that point. The integral is taken over the surface of the particle. As an example, the viscosity of dilute suspension of a nearly spherical particle is calculated.
