Using the techniques of fluorescence x'ecovery after fringe-pattern photobleaching(FRAP), we measured the self-diffusi<cn coefficient D. c>f elongated micelles ofpotassium oleate and sodium oleate as a function of the concentratic>n of the am-phiphiles for various salinity. In the dilute regime of the amphiphile concentration weevaluated the weight-averaged aggregation number<#>from measured D, anddemonstrated that for each salinity<77>increases in proportion to the square root ofthe amphiphile concentration in agreeument with the theoretical growth law. Thedependence of the proportionalit)' constant on the salinity VV8S also explained well (atleast for high salinity) by a theory based on the F,vans-Mitchell-Ninharn electrostaticfree energy of spherical and rodlike cc>Iloidal particles (J. Phys. Chem. 88 (1984)6344). In the semi-dilute regime we confirmed the power-law dependence of D. on theamphiphile concentration. The exponent was dependent on the salinity in accordancewith the reported behavior of other amphiphiles.micelle, self-diffusion, FRAP, living polymer, aggregation number, experiment
