Continuous-wave laser oscillation has been obtained on the 488.0 nm transition of singly ionized argon in a pure Ar plasma excited by a steady intense electron beam, of which energy and current can be independently controlled up to 300 eV and 11 A, respectively. This scheme has possibilities of increasing the efficiency, power and spectral range of ion lasers.
