Enhancement of Second-Harmonic Generation in Langmuir-Blodgett Monolayer Films by Molecular Mixing of Homologous Amphiphiles

Two homologous azobenzene-linked amphiphiles, which possess the same chemical structure except for hydrophilic groups, were mixed at the molecular level in a monolayer. The polar amphiphile with nitro substituent as a hydrophilic group was vertically oriented in the mixed monolayer by performing molecular mixing with the homologous amphiphile with small polarity. Strong second-harmonic generation compared with those in each single-component monolayer was observed in the mixed monolayer.
