Ionization instability of nonequilibrium magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) plasma in a disk-type inert gas cycle direct (ICD) power generator has been examined by numerical simulation based on the two-temperature model. The plasma is metastable and becomes unstable when the amplitude of disturbances exceeds a critical value. Transition to an unstable state also depends on the direction of the disturbance wave, and the result shows good agreement with theory. Appearances of inhomogeneous structures when the plasma is unstable are revealed by two-dimensional numerical calculation.
