Diffraction of electrons injected into an open space from a narrow channel is discussed in comparison with the Fraunhoffer diffraction of ordinary lights. The Kirchhoff-Huygens theorem is invoked and modified slightly to solve the boundary value problem in the tight-binding approximation for electrons in solids in the presence of magnetic fields. The Fraunhoffer diffraction pattern is affected significantly by the transversal motion within the waveguide and it usually has two peaks when the electron wave belongs to a single transverse mode. The calculation with the billiard model is interpreted from a point of view of the wave mechanics.
