A Phenomenological Analysis of Crystal Growth from Solutions as an Irreversible Proeess

Crystal growth is a typical irreversible process and is viewed as a result of the mutual inter-ference of heat flow and material flow in a crystal growth system. A phenomenological theory is formulated here on some empirical aspects such as the facts that the partial molar volume of a solute in solution is very similar to the volume in its crystal and that its mixing entropy is changed linearly with the inverse of temperature. These facts are discussed critically. This theory includes only temperature as the valiable of state, because the other valiables are very difficult to determine and therfore are eliminated rigorously by using the empirical aspects discussed. The theory indicates that the gradient of the temperature on surfaces of a growing crystal is a very important factor which governs the growth velocity of the crystal.
