The characteristics of the N_2O laser are presented in both CW and Q-switched operations. The single-wavelength operation is obtained in the CW operation and Q-switched operation with a rotating-mirror. The Q-switched laser pulse has a 150-W output peak power with a width of 0.7 μs. The self-mode locking is also observed with the rotating-mirror Q-switching. The passive Q-switching is achieved on the P(13) and P(29) lines by using NH_3 gas as a saturable absorber. The peak power of 5 times the CW power is obtained. The passive Q-switching on the P(29) line is attributed to the asQ(14, 13) line of NH_3.
