The time behavior of pulsed gain at 337μm of HCN laser is investigated. The absorption pulse is observed in the pulsed current of a width of 3μs. This means that the HCN molecules are already produced in an electrical discharge through gases with H, C and N atoms, and that the population of the upper laser level is instantaneously smaller than that of the lower level. The decay time of the pulsed gain, which is as long as 40 to 80 μs, is no measure of the life time of the upper laser level. This is confirmed by the fact that the Q-switching of the pulsed 337μm HCN laser gives almost no increase in output over the normal pulsed output which may be due to the fact that life time of the upper level is as short as a few μs.
