Synthesis de novo of Glutamine Synthetase in the Embryonic Axis, Closely Related to the Germination of Lettuce Seeds

Glutamine synthetase (GS) was purified from lettuce seeds incubated under red light. The amount of enzyme protein was estimated by rocket immunoelectrophoresis using a specific antiserum. Red light and gibberellin separately increased the level of enzyme protein in the embryonic axis. The increases in the protein were completely suppressed by cycloheximide. High temperature (35℃) caused a rapid decrease in the enzymatic activity, but no decrease in the level of enzyme protein. Translation in vitro of poly(A)^+RNA extracted from the seeds demonstrated that level of translatable mRNA for GS increased in the seeds irradiated by red light.
