SDS-solubilized thylakoid membranes of Bryopsis maxima showed a similar pattern to those of higher plants in SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Absorption spectra and pigment composition of both CPl and CPa bands were similar to those of higher plants and other algae. Five bands containing chlorophyll (Chl) b were divided into three categories ; a group of major light-harvesting Chl a/b-protein complexes (LHCP 1 , LHCP 2 and LHCP 3), a minor LHCP (LHCP 3') and a photosystem I complex (CPla). LHCP 1, the high molecular form, showed the lowest Chl a/b ratio among the LHCPs, and contained only xanthophylls as carotenoids. LHCP 2, LHCP 3 and LHCP 3' bands contained xanthophylls and carotene. Carotenoid composition of LHCP 3' was different from that of the major LHCPs. CPla band contained a considerable amount of siphonaxanthin and siphonein.
