A diurnal rhythm was found in the Hill reaction in cell-free extracts of the green alga Byopsis mexima. The rate of photoreduction of 2,6-dichloroindophenol showed a rhythm synchronized with that of photosynthetic O_2 evolution. A diurnal rhythm was also observed in the rate of O_2 evolution accompanying the reduction of p-benzoquinone with phase and frequency similar to those of the rhythm of photosynthesis. These results indicate that a regulation mechanism underlying the photosynthesis rhythm exists in the photosynthetic electron transport chain in chloroplasts.
