Invagination of plasmalemma : Its role in the absorption of macromolecules in rice roots

In order to investigate the mechanism of entry of organic nitrogen into root cells, the ultrastructure of rice roots water-cultured in medium containing hemoglobin as the sole nitrogen source was studied using an electron microscope. Many invaginations of the plasmalemma were observed in the differentiating and elongating zones of the roots. They could be classified tentatively into three types. An intimate morphological relationship exists between vacuoles and the invagination of the plasmalemma, which suggests that endocytosis occurs in rice root cells. The possibility of plant roots absorbing macromolecules by endocytosis is discussed.
