Alicyclic acid metabolism in plants 7. Metabolism of ^<14>C-labelled alicyclic acids in germinating Phaseolus mungo seeds

When Phaseolus mungo seeds were allowed to geminate in 5-20 mM quinate solution in the dark, a marked increase in the endogenous shikimic acid level occurred in their tissues. The acid level rose distinctly on the 2nd day of germination and reached a maximum on the 4th day. The quinate-^<14>C fed to germinating seeds was predominantly converted to shikimic acid, and little radioactivity was found in 3-dehydroshikimic acid. When quinate-^<14>C was supplied simultaneously with relatively high concentrations of 3-dehydroquinic acid or 3-dehydroshikimic acid, its conversion to shikimic acid was restrained, but hardly any radioactivity was trapped in either of the dehydro compounds. 3-Dehydroquinic acid-^<14>C or 3-dehydroshikimic acid-^<14>C fed to the seeds was metabolized preferentially to shikimic acid. The experimental results are discussed with respect to the metabolic relationship between quinic acid and other alicyclic acids in the aromatic biosynthesis of P. mungo seedlings.
