Properties of the proteinaceous inhibitor of ethylene synthesis : Action on ethylene production and indoleacetylaspartate formation

Several properties of the proteinaceous inhibitor of ethylene biosynthesis are described. The inhibitor reversibly inhibited ethylene production by auxin-treated hypocotyi segments of etiolated mungbean seedlings. It also inhibited endogenous ethylene formation. Fluorescence microscopy of tissue treated with the inhibitor labeled with a fluorescent dye, FITC, revealed that the action of the inhibitor only on epidermal cells was enough to achieve inhibition. The site of auxin-induced ethylene production was assumed to be the epidermis. The inhibitor inhibits neither respiration of hypocotyl segments nor auxin-induced elongation growth of wheat coleoptiles. Relative levels of free IAA in tissue were not altered by the inhibitor, but IA-Asp formation was reversively suppressed. A possible interrelation between ethylene production and IA-Asp formation is discussed.
