Histochemistry in the age of "Tailored medicine"

Recently the concept of tailored medicine, or tailormade medicine or target specific medicine has been introduced into the medical practice based on recent development of basic cell or molecular biology. Tailored medicine is based on the concept of individualizationof specific therapy in the patients. Single nucleotide polymorphism or other markers of genomic DNA has been proposed but its significance still remains undetermined. The main aspect of tailored medicine at this juncture is the determination of specific targets in the tissues on which medications exerted theireffects. In the field of clinical oncology, this concept has become more prevalent among oncologists. The most studied examples are the treatment in breast cancer. These include the determination of estrogen receptors in cases of anti estrogens andof HER2/neu in the treatment of Herceptin, a humanized monoclonal antibody against HER2/neu protein. In these cases, it is very important to evaluate whether these are present in the resected specimens or not in order to determine the possible effectiveness of the therapy. For this purpose, histochemical evaluation is becoming the golden standard.
