The anterior subventricular zone(SVZa)-rostral migratory stream(RMS)system of the rodent forebrain retains the capacity to differentiate into neurons throughout adulthood. However, it remains to be elucidated how tenaciously the proliferative capacity persists with time of maturation and aging. We analyzed the temporal change of the number as well as the ratio of neural precursors in SVZa-RMS system of mice by labeling them with bromodeoxyuridine. The ratio of proliferating cells in proximal RMS remained at 6.5% even 6 months after birth, whereas those in the distal RMS and hippocampus showed a gradual decline, suggesting that the SVZa-RMS system may be the optimal target for experiments using adult neuronal precursors to recruit neurons.
