An _L-serine degradation-defective mutant of Nocardia butanica accumulated _L-serine (3.0 mg/ml) from glycine more efficiently than the parent strain, ATCC21197 (<0.5mg/ml). The _L-serine-accumulation ability of this mutant was further improved by development of resitance to analogs of methionine, folate, purine and glutamine. The finally selected mutant, strain KY-7990,defective in _L-serine degradation and multi-resistant to glycine hydroxamate, ethionine and methionine sulfone, accumulated 5.0 mg/ml of _L-serine in a medium supplemented with 20 mg/ml of glycine.
