A301 EFFECT OF TRANSVERSE CONVEX CURVATURE ON THE ONSET OF NUCLEATE BOILING IN CONCENTRIC ANNULI : EXPERIMENTS(Subcooled boiling)

An experimental investigation on the incipience of nucleate boiling in forced convective flow with water was performed as a verification of the convex curvature effect from previous analytic study. The effects of the subcooling, Reynolds number and surface curvature on the onset of nucleate boiling(ONB) in a concentric annulus flow channel with a smooth inner heating surface were experimentally investigated. Through flow visualization, the boiling phenomenon was directly observed and the experimental results were examined to find the heat flux at ONB. The results show that the variation of heat flux at the ONE increases linearly as the Reynolds number and subcooling increase at the same size of the test case. The effect of the surface curvature is significantly high so that the heat flux at the ONB increases rapidly at the same diameter ratio, Reynolds number and subcooling. It is found that the maximum increase of the ONB heat flux at the smallest inner tube is 7 times higher than that of the largest test section tested.
