F207 COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE NEAR WAKE OF A CIRCULAR CYLINDER : PIV, LES AND DNS(Complex turbulent flows)

Measurements of the turbulence statistics are made using a high resolution digital Particle Image Velocimetry for the flow over a circular cylinder at the Reynolds number of 3900 based on the free-stream velocity and cylinder diameter. To provide an accurate measurement, over 2000 realizations of the instantaneous velocity fields are ensemble-averaged. The results are compared with the existing experimental data and numerical calculations obtained by DNS and LES methods. In general, the qualitative behaviors are well agree with all the compared cases. However, quite severe quantitative discrepancies being exist between experiments and calculations for the near wake especially in the recirculating flow region.
