The role of transient creep stage in practical heat resisting steels and alloys has not been paid attention, because most of the creep curves in such materials is believed to be occupied by accelerating creep. By drawing the creep rate - time curves of Ni-based superalloy single crystal, the drastic change in creep curve with decreasing stress is elucidated. At higher stresses, most of the curve is occupied by accelerating creep, while, at lower stresses, more than 50 percent of the creep duration is occupied by transient creep. The drastic change in creep curve with decreasing stress is attributed to the retardation of the onset of accelerating creep, which is experimentally confirmed in the γ single crystal Ni-20Cr alloy. Same stress dependence in transient creep stage are confirmed in the creep curves of CrMoV steel but the stress dependence of transient creep in Ni-20Cr polycrystalline is not drastic. The ratio of the duration of transient creep to rupture life in the above materials are evaluated by drawing stress - time at the minimum creep rate, t_m, curves with log - log scale.
