Appropriate stereological representations of rafting phenomenon in nickel-based single-crystal superalloys have been explored. The analysis has been applied to the microstructural observations of stress aging test samples of CMSX-4 single crystals at 1323 K. Selecting appropriate stereological parameters, a reasonable morphological development has been revealed ; from cuboidal γ' precipitate to γ' rafts in γ matrix, γ rafts in γ' matrix, and finally fragmentation of γ rafts. The microstructure starts rafting at 0.5% strain, keeps good rafted morphology between 0.8 to 2% strain, alter the matrix phase from γ' to γ, and then starts to collapse, for all stress conditions. The accomplishment of the raft and alternation of the matrix phase are roughly correspond to the appearance of the minimum creep rate.
