The yielding of mild steel beam can not be explained by any of the theories hitherto existed. The object of this paper is to propose a new theory which can explain the phenomena of yielding of mild steel. The author considers that it is a problem of stability, and is analogous to the critical point of viscous flow through a pipe. Thus all the stress distribution must have the effect on the yield point. At the yield point the elastic part yields in succession under a constant bending moment, and thus the diagram showing the relation between the bending moment and the deflection becomes horizontal during the yielding of the whole length. So the moment at this horizontal part must be taken as the yield point. This yield point can be calculated from the fact that the stress is uniform in the part where two states, one yielded and the other not yet yielded, exist mixedly. The strain of an yielding part shifts suddenly from the elastic strain to the plastic strain which is definite for the material and is very large compared with the elastic one, so from the continuity we must consider that when a part yields some adjoining parts must also yield. From this fact the yield point can also be calculated. The calculated values were confirmed by experiments.
