Charge Transfer Bands of LiX: Cu^<2+> (X: Cl, Br ) and Their MCD Spectra

The absorption and MCD spectra of Cu"-doped LiC1 and Liar single crystalsare studied in the resion 15,000 -50,000 cm -" mainly at LNT. Two absorptionbands (28,l50cm=' (B) and 36,2O0cm-' (C)) and three absorr>tion bands(19,000cm-" (B), 22,500cm=' (B') and 29,500cm-" (C)) are observed at LNTin the quenched LiCI: Cu" and Liar: Cu" crxstals, resr>ectivelv, and assinnedto the charge transfer transitions in the Cu"-hexahalide complexes formed in theLi-halide host crystals. The observed absorption and MCD spectra are explainedby taking into account the mixing of two t.. molecular orbitals which consist ofligand halogen p. and p. orbitals.
