The optical properties of MgBr. have been studied by means of the reflectionspectra in the region from VUV to XUV, the absorption spectra in the VUVregion, and also by the XPS and UPS. Besides, the band structure of the valencebands is calculated by the tight binding method and the lower conduction bandsby use of the empty lattice model.It is found that the top of the valence bands consists of f,- and T9 bandswhich are almost degenerate by the crystal field, and that the observed fourexciton peaks are tentatively explained as the spin-orbit splitting of these twolevels.
