Spin-Orbit Splitting of T Exciton Bands in RbI and KI

The exciton absorption bands in Rb[ and Kl are studied by means of magneticcircular dichroism spectra, and their effective p-values are obtained. From the signof the g...-values, it is concluded that the lowest two sharp absorption bands,E. and E., are (T; ; F:) and (F; ; FJ) excitons, respectively, which are split bythe spin-orbit interaction of iodine 5p electrons. The higher energy bands, E.and E., are probably the exciton bands produced by excitation of halogen 5pelectrons to the #-like conduction bands at X and L points in the Brillouin zone.
