The order parameter Q(x) for incommensurate transitions can, as is well known, beexpressed as a sum of harmonics Q. e"", where n takes on integers. Let cv, the degreeof anisotropy of the free energy function, have t divisors cv.(=cv)>cv.>I - >c*, . >cv,( = 1 ). Then, t different types of incommensurate phases can be con-ceived, the jth of which has Q.,:O for and only for n=1-Fcx,v (v=0, +[,-I- 2, " ' ). The j = 1 type is ordinarily incommensurate. The j = t type is essentially thesame as recently termed semicommensurate. The 2 3 j @ t - l types are new proposals;they can be recognized as twofold incommensurate (while the j = l type as onefold in-commensurate). Transitions involving twofold incommensurate phases are possible.A detailed account of this possibility is given.
