Four possible types of ferroelectric incommensurate phases have been proposedhitherto. This paper proposes a fifth type. Assume for simplicity that the prototype isorthorhombic and centrosymmetric. Let the order parameters have wavevectors(81, "rp, 0) and be four in number, where ) and p are simple positive rationalnumbers. Denote these order parameters by Q., Q:, Q, and Q7,. A general term inthe Fourier expansion of Q. has the form Q... C)CP i (mh.x-I- nh, y), where m and nare integers. It is important that the number of mutually independent h's is two, notone. Phases with l Q...1 = l Q,..1 and Q...= Q...= 0 and Q.,.. or Q..,: 0 are possi-ble. They are a kind of incommensurate phases (appropriate to be called "demicom-mensurate"). Some of them are found to be ferroelectric, some ferroelastic, andsome neither ferroelectric nor ferroelastic. These ferroelectric incommensuratephases are of the fifth type.
