It is assumed that the order parameters are two or more pairs IQ., Q:'j, {0,Q; }, - f I . For those terms in the free energy func:Lion which are linear in a, andquadratic in Q, two different forms, (Q:8.Q. -0.d.0,:)-f=-= and (Q;8.Q.Q.8.Q;) -f ' l '>can be conceived. The latter (7winy) form is rarer than the former (sim-pie) form. Just like terms of the simple form, terms of the twiny form can generateincommensurateness. Consider phases derived from a common prototype. Thehighest-point-symmetried one of the incommensurate phases of the simple gradientform belongs to the prototype point group and hence is nonferroeNectric, whereas thehighest-point-symmetried one (temporarily called phase cv) of the incommensuratephases of the twiny gradient form can be ferroelectr'ic. It is possible that on cooling,the prototypic phase makes a second-order transition to phase cv. The details areclarified by study of a specific case in which the simple and twiny forms both appear.
