Second-Order Transitions from Prototypic Phases to Simultaneously Incommensurate and Ferroelectric Phases of a Newly Proposed Type

Three possible types of simultaneously incommensurate and ferroelectric phaseshave been proposed hitherto. In this paper a fourth type is proposed. Ferroelectric in-commensurate phases of this type are due to relation P=J(Q.Q: - Q,Q;) or, moregenerally, P= f ( l Q. l', l Q, l', l Q, l',- - - ), where P denotes a polarization compo-nent; J is a mere coefficient; Q., Q:, Q, etc. compose a degenerate set of orderparameters; f is a function of any number of order parameters depending only ontheir absolute values and not on their arguments. These ferroelectric incommensuratephases, unlike those of the former three types, can succeed prototypic phases by sec-ond-order transition. Two imaginary examples of ferroelectric incommensuratephases of the fourth type are presented and investigated. In one of them the ferroelec-tric direction is perpendicular to the incommensurate direction, while in the other thetwo directions are parallel.
