A reducible but unreduced-esp., evenest -rectilinear system of transitionparameters is useful for a unified phenomenological theory of a complex familyof substances. As an example, a 3-dim. system (whose members are writtenUg, U., &3) is applied to the Rochelle salt family. The second degree part of thefree energy function takes the form Br(U'. T U'. -V Ufi)-VBn(Uz Us * Us Ux X Ur Un)-If B.<0, the prototypic phase changes to a ferroic phase such that U..=U..=U.., at the temperature where B. -[-7l?.=0. If 7l?.>0, the prototypic phase changesto a ferroic phase such that I Uj.=0, at the temperature where Bg -Bz/2=O.The former fcrroic phase belongs to space group "P2.11 (the initial superscriptindicates cell multiplicity), while the latter to 'P112 or 'P12.1. Other details arealso deduced.
