Electronic and optical properties of alkali-halides lNaCl-structure KBr/RbCl strperlattices arecalculated by the first-principles and variational methods. It is shown that KBr/RbCl is a type-I strperlattice whose band offsets are independent of the interface orientation becattse of snaallcovalency between constitvrents. Due to the sizable compensation between the confinernent andbinding energies of exciton, the excitonic band-gap energy shows a srnall increase with decreasingthe quantum-well layerthickness, xvhich is in good agreement with experimental results. Higherenergy absorption spectra of these systerns are also discussed.
