Competition between the Bond Alternation and the Anisotropy in a Spin-1/2 XY Chain

We investigate the ground state of the alternating spin-1/2 XY chain with theanisotropyH=J I [1 -F-( - l)'J][(1-F-7)SjS7..-l-(1 -'7)S'7S7..j, J>0,where 0< y< l and 0< (>< 1 . From the exact results of the ground state energy calcula-tion, the ground state is found to be either one of the following three states: the spinfluid state (y = d = 0), the effective singlet pair state (ES state ; (>l.>y ) and the Neel state(y >15 ). We also exactly calculate the asymptotic form of the longitudinal spin correla-tion<5755>in the long distance limit.
