S=1/2 Heisenberg Chain with Bond Alternation in the S^z-S^z Coupling

• The effect of bond alternation in the .5' -.5' coupling (z-alternation) on thedimerization in an S=I/2 Heisenberg chain is investigated both analytically andnumerically. The spin Hamiltonian is transformed into the phase llamiltonian, andthe variational method is used. An analytical study shows that the z-alternation playsan important role and brings about the dimerizationt when there is no bond alternation in the S"-S'and.5'-S'couplings. The results of numerical diagonalization forfinite systems support the above analytical conclusicvn.Heisenberg chain, bond alternation, dimerizatiouu, phase transition
