Short Range Structural Analysis of Lead Silicate Glasses by Pulsed Neutron Total Scattering

The static structure factors of lead silicate glasses (Pb0).(SiOz). . (0<,X'<0.66)have been measured over a wide range of the scattering vector Q(=4n sin 0/2) up to30 A ' by means of the pulsed neutron total scattering. The peak separation of Pb-0and 0-0 pair in the radial distribution function was first observed, and the averagecoordination number of the nearest oxygen atoms around lead atom was determinedto be about three. The deformation of Sin. tetrahedra was also observed as Pb0 con-centration was increased. The detailed radial distribution analysis based on the pairdistributions of the corresponding crystal structure strongly stuggests the coexistenceof different kinds of Pb-0 bond with different distances in the glass system.
