Current Sustainment by lower Hybrid Waves in the WT-2 Tokamak

When RF power P....j near the lower hybrid frequency is injected into theohmically heated plasma in the WT-2 tokamak, the RF-driven current is gen-erated (7.j:12kA) and the plasma (z.:3 x 10"cm-') is sustained by this cur-rent without olunic current during the injection of PLII.. The efficiency of RFcutrent drive is obtained as Z..=0.06P.../z.=7? (kA,kW, 10" cm ',m), where7? is the major radius. The current I,( is carried by suprathermal electrons whichinteract resonantly with lower hybrid waves. A high frequency instability andassociated relaxation oscillation are observed, which can be suppressed by asimultaneous injection of the electron cyclotron heating power.
