Hot electrons (50–60 keV) are produced by using collimated microwave power in the barrier region of the axisymmetrized tandem mirror GAMMA 10. Saturation of the hot electron temperature and a successive increase in the hot electron density are observed; these are desirable for creating a thermal barrier potential and for maintaining MHD stability. The temperature saturation is explained in terms of the wave-particle resonance condition and the trajectory of the electron bounce motion in the electron pitch angle, $\theta$, vs the magnetic field intensity, $B$, -plane. This representation explains the electron cyclotron heating (ECH) process, corrected for the effects of the relativistic mass variation and the Doppler shift. Also, an application of this representation for investigating the axial profile of soft X-rays clarifies the hot electron production due to second harmonic ECH.
