The reductive perturbation method is applied to the Vlasov equation which governs the one dimendional motion of collisionless plasmas. The present formulation makes it possible to investigate the nonlinear modulation of the plasma waves with an arbitrary dispersion. Structures of the resulting nonlinear Schrodinger equation have been studied explicitly for the electron plasma wave and for the ion plasma wave.
