Nonlinear modulation of quasi-monochromatic electromagnetic waves propagating paralled to an external magnetic field is investigated with particular attention to contributions of resonant particles at the group velocity. As well as the case of electrostatic waves, the contributions of these resonant particles give rise to a generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Coefficients of the nonlinear terms are evaluated explicitly for plasma encountered in the solar wind and for magnetospheric plasma.
