Nuclear Magnetic Relaxation in Sc and La Metals

The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time, T_1, and the spin-spin relaxation time, T_2, of Sc^<45>and La^<193> nuclei in the respective metals were measured in the temperature range of 1.5°K to 77°K. The measurements were made at 1O Mc/sec. for Sc and 5 Mc/sec. for La by the conventional pulse method. The samples were obtained from Research Chemicals for Sc and from K & K Laboratories for La. Both samples were used in powder form of 1Oμ in average size and their purities were both 99.9%. The results are shown in Fig. 1. T_1 of both metals was proportional to inverse temperature, 1/T, over the temperature range measured. Using the measured value of the Knight shift^<1)>, K, of these metals and the Korringa relation^<2)>, one can calculate the Korringa time, T_<1k>, if one assumes that the electrons producing both K and Z_<1k> are behaving as uncorrelated electrons of mainly s character.
