Optical solitons in fiber grating in xvhich the dielectric constant varies periodically along it, areinvestigated. It is proved that the envelope of the Bloch wave obeys the nonlinear Schr6dingerequation. As an application, gap solitons in a strper-lattice are disctrssed. The concept andmethod presented in this paper are useftrl not only for explaining receratly observed Bragg gratingsoliton but for analyzing a large class of nonlinear periodic systems.
