The grotrnd state properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate with repttlsive or attractive inferatounic interaction confined in axially syraanuetric magnetic trap are sttrdied throtrgh the varia-tional approach. It is shoxvn that, if the trap has a high asyzauunetry auad thtrs the eqtri-potentialsturface of the trap is of "cigar" or "pancake" shape, tlue properties of the condensate are dras-tically claanged from the case of isotropic (splaerically syuaauaaetric) trap.
